For this project, I designed covers for the captivating biography written by Jon Krakauer. A young man abandons his corporate life to journey into the Alaskan wilderness in search of adventure, meaning, and ultimate freedom. For these cover directions, I created imaginative, handcrafted collage imagery, and used simple typefaces because it tied together the authentic grounded nature of the story with the emotional, surreal storytelling. I also chose thin, serif, minimalist fonts because they are subtle and delicate. From a businessman’s scrambled head to depict the tension and hecticness of traditional life, a grizzly bear peeking out of a bus symbolizing the dichotomy between nature and civilization, to a torn-up bus on a string connecting the unraveling of Chris’ fate. The surreal artwork, with its tactile and tangible quality, captures the unconventional beauty of Chris’s journey, interwoven with the theme of individual versus society, nature, and survival.
